St Valentine

Friday 14th February and Saturday 15th February

This Valentine’s Day we’re telling a story from our heartland

We tell the story of the impossible love of Sister Mariana Alcoforado, a nun at the Convent of Our Lady of the Conception in Beja, and the French knight Noel Bouton, who passed through Portugal during the Restoration War.

On Friday and Saturday, 14 and 15 February, we have prepared a Special Dinner, accompanied by the recitation of excerpts from Mariana’s letters to Noël, testimony to the love between the two, published in 1669 and today considered a classic of literature. Actor Miguel Gregório will be the resident declaimer.

Dinner will feature a showcase of our cuisine, including: Coriander cream with boiled egg, Cod confit with a crust of flavoured Alentejo bread and Black pork cheeks with sweet potato and sautéed mushrooms. For dessert, choose between Curd cheese tart or Sericaia with Elvas plums.

Herdade do Rocim brings us the Mariana wine, so called because from the winery’s terraces you can see the tower of Beja castle in the distance, evoking the memory of Mariana Alcoforado cloistered away as she wrote to her beloved.

Start at 20:15 with a welcome drink. Dinner will be served at 20:30. During dinner we’ll have 4 moments of declamation of Mariana’s letters.
